Setting the Scene

Makwa's first lesson with grandmother is not a word list — it is a walk. Grandmother points at things and names them. Slowly Makwa realizes that some words end in -ag and others in -an when there are more than one. She is beginning to feel the heartbeat of Ojibwemowin: everything is either animate or inanimate.

1 A Walk Through the Land

Grandmother points to a stone: asin.

Then two stones: asinan. Then a tree: mitigomizh. Two trees: mitigomizhan. Makwa starts to hear the pattern. The -an ending is for things the language calls inanimate.

2 The Animate Plural: -ag

Then grandmother picks up a feather — miigwan.

Two feathers: miigwanag. The plural is -ag, not -an. Feathers are animate. Stones are inanimate. Makwa asks: how do you know? Grandmother says: you learn. You listen. The language tells you.

3 Animacy Is Not About Life

Makwa expects animals to be animate and rocks to be inanimate. But grandmother surprises her: ogimaakwe

7 Animate Counting Practice
